LMS glossary
The vocabulary that appears in LMS proposals and procurement documents, explained in plain language — with links to the questions where each term actually matters.
- LMS
- Short for learning management system: software used to create, deliver, manage and track courses, learners, assessments and results. What is an LMS?
- Learning management system
- The full name for an LMS. It manages the whole teaching operation — content, enrolments, schedules, assessment and records — rather than just publishing material.
- SCORM
- A long-established packaging standard for e-learning content, so a course produced in one authoring tool can be played inside a compatible LMS. Confirm support with any vendor you shortlist.
- xAPI
- A newer standard for recording learning activity, including activity that happens outside the LMS. Often paired with a learning record store.
- LTI
- Learning Tools Interoperability: a standard for connecting external tools to an LMS so learners can use them without a separate login.
- SIS
- Student information system: the system of record for admissions, enrolment, fees and official student data. It usually stays in place alongside an LMS. Can an LMS replace a school portal?
- CMS
- Content management system: software for publishing web content to visitors. It has no concept of enrolment, progress or assessment. LMS vs CMS
- SSO
- Single sign-on: signing in once with an existing organizational account instead of maintaining separate LMS credentials. Confirm which providers a vendor supports today.
- LMS analytics
- Reporting built from recorded activity — enrolment, attendance, submissions, completion and results. Depth usually differs between free and paid plans.
- LMS hosting
- Where the software runs. Hosted platforms run it for you; self-hosted software runs on infrastructure you provide and maintain. Free LMS vs Moodle
- LMS migration
- Moving courses, learners and records from one platform to another. Best done at a term boundary, after confirming what the old system will export. Can I migrate from another LMS?
- Course authoring
- Building lesson content inside the platform: text, files, video and structure. The speed of authoring is the strongest predictor of teacher adoption.
- Assessment
- Any activity that measures learning: assignments, quizzes, projects or exams. On Naseej, quizzes and question banks belong to paid plans.
- Certificate
- A record issued on completion of a course or programme. Availability, templates and volume limits differ by plan, so verify them before you buy.
- Blended learning
- Teaching that mixes in-person sessions with online material and live online classes.
- Synchronous learning
- Learning that happens at the same time for everyone, such as a live online class.
- Asynchronous learning
- Learning learners complete at their own pace, from published material and recordings.
- E-learning
- Learning delivered digitally. E-learning is the activity; an LMS is the software that organizes it. LMS vs e-learning
- Mobile learning
- Studying from a phone or tablet. In most Gulf organizations this is the majority case, so it should be tested from a learner account rather than assumed.
- RTL
- Right-to-left: the writing direction of Arabic. An RTL-capable interface mirrors layout and handles mixed Arabic-English text correctly. What is an RTL LMS?
- Accessibility
- Whether learners using keyboards, screen readers or high-contrast settings can complete the same tasks as anyone else. Worth testing during a pilot.
- Freemium
- A pricing model where an ongoing free tier exists alongside paid plans. Different from a free trial, which expires. What is a free LMS?
- Open source
- Software published under a licence that lets anyone run and modify it. Free to license; hosting, upgrades and support remain your responsibility. What is an open-source LMS?
- Total cost of ownership
